The Man Who Loved Books by Allison Hoover Bartlett

Review written by Jon Batson

The Man who Loved Books Too Much is a true, well-researched story of a thief and those whose lives and book collections he touched.  It is intriguing in that it is well-researched and a lot can be learned about books and collectors.  Some of the stories are interesting and it is amazing what people will go through to obtain a book - one they might not even read, or be able to.  Just to have a rare edition, even in another language, seems to be enough to risk loss of freedom for some.

It is not an action or mystery. There is no hero and no villain, save that the
central character is a thief. There is no revealing of the villain at the end.
It is the unraveling of a mystery involving how and why someone would steal a
book.

I would recommend that you carry the book. I don't recommend this lightly, I
believe that there are those who would buy this book in order to learn about the
subject. As it is a true story, it will appeal to those who enjoy a true story,
in knowing that the facts they are reading about, though fantastic, really
happened.

To someone who is not in that world at all, the world of priceless collectibles
and large, private libraries housed in gigantic, impressive mansions, it is a
glimpse into the lives of those who live there, as if on another planet, a
parallel universe that briefly touches our own.
